Cookies

A cookie is a small piece of data a site asks your browser to store and hand back on later visits. It is how most sites recognise a returning visitor, keep a session open, or attribute a visit to a campaign. Local storage does a similar job with a different mechanism.

Analytics cookies, outside the EEA, the UK and Switzerland. There, Google Analytics sets its own first-party cookies on this domain (_ga, and _ga_ followed by an ID) to tell visits and sessions apart. Inside those regions it sets none by default. No necessary cookie, no preference cookie, no session storage entry and nothing else of ours.

The measurement code leaves internal visits out of the figures — automated browsers, other hostnames and pages opened with ?internal=1 appended — without writing anything to your browser: no cookie and no local-storage entry.

This site loads Google Analytics 4 to count visits. Before it runs, every page sets Google Consent Mode defaults by region: in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, analytics, advertising and personalisation storage is denied by default and no analytics cookie is stored; everywhere else, Australia included, analytics storage is granted by default and Google Analytics sets the cookies named above.

There is no consent banner here, of ours or Google’s, and no on-site choice; nothing on the page changes those defaults. To limit measurement, block or clear cookies in your browser settings, or install Google’s Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

This page will not imply that measurement is unseen. The tag is fetched from Google’s own server at googletagmanager.com, so that request reaches Google as a matter of how the connection works, and Google receives the page address, the page you came from, an approximate location derived from your IP address, and your device and browser type. If you would rather none of that happened, blocking the script in your browser or with an extension breaks nothing else here.

None. The Google Analytics cookies described above are first-party cookies on this domain; the tag is the only thing loaded from another domain, and no font, image, video embed or stylesheet comes from anywhere but this site, so nobody else is in a position to set one.

Links out to official Victorian services take you to somebody else’s site, which has its own cookie practices and its own notice about them.

There is no cookie banner and no on-site choice on this site. The storage defaults are set by region before the measurement tag loads, as described above, and nothing on the page changes them; your browser settings and Google’s opt-out add-on are the ways to limit measurement.

If advertising is ever added, this page changes first.
