Cookies

A cookie is a small piece of data a site asks your browser to store and hand back on later visits. It is how most sites recognise a returning visitor, keep a session open, or attribute a visit to a campaign. Local storage does a similar job with a different mechanism.

Nothing, on an ordinary visit. No cookie, no local storage entry, no session storage entry and no other persistent identifier. If you open your browser’s storage inspector on any page of this site, the list for this domain is empty.

There is exactly one exception, and it is ours rather than yours: opening any address here with ?internal=1 stores a gr_int cookie for a year, plus a matching local storage entry, and switches the measurement tag off for that browser. It exists so our own testing stays out of the figures. Nothing links to it, an ordinary visit never triggers it, and it holds a single flag rather than anything about you.

This site loads Google Analytics 4 to count visits. Before it runs, every page sends a consent declaration that denies analytics storage, advertising storage, advertising personalisation and personalisation storage — for every visitor, in every country, with no regional exception. The tag therefore runs cookieless: it writes no analytics cookie and stores no identifier on your device.

That denial is permanent, not pending. There is no consent banner here, of ours or Google’s, and nothing on the site can switch analytics storage on, so there is nothing for you to accept and nothing to withdraw.

Cookieless is not the same as unseen, and this page will not imply otherwise. The tag is fetched from Google’s own server at googletagmanager.com, so that request reaches Google as a matter of how the connection works, and Google receives the page address, the page you came from, an approximate location derived from your IP address, and your device and browser type. If you would rather none of that happened, blocking the script in your browser or with an extension breaks nothing else here.

None. The measurement tag described above is the only thing loaded from another domain, and it sets no cookie — no font, image, video embed or stylesheet comes from anywhere but this site, so nobody else is in a position to set one either.

Links out to official Victorian services take you to somebody else’s site, which has its own cookie practices and its own notice about them.

A consent banner exists to obtain agreement to storing or reading information on your device. This site does neither, so there is nothing to obtain agreement for, and a banner would be a piece of theatre that made the site slower and harder to read.

That is why measurement here was built to be cookieless rather than to be consented to: the storage denial is unconditional, so no agreement is required and none is being collected from you by implication.
